The War between England and France in North America

Today the official language of the United States and most of Canada is English. However, French almost became the official language because of a war.

The French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763. The name of this war is not exactly correct because the war was actually between England and France. The Indians fought on the side of the French.

France and England wanted to gain control of North America. France held Canada, and England held part of what is now the United States.

However, France tried to occupy more land by moving southward into New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. When the French built a fort on the Ohio River, the inhabitants in Virginia sent George Washington to attack the fort in 1754. However, the French defeated Washington.

The French, aided by the Indians, outsmarted the English and won many early battles. Later, the British began to do well against the French. in the final battle in Quebec, Canada, General Wolfe of England faced General Montcalm from France. Both generals died in this battle, but the English won the battle in the end. Thus, most of North America today has the English culture and language.

The Harm of Radioactivity

Radioactivity is dangerous. It may cause skin burns; it may destroy good tissues and what it may cause can be passed on to our children and grandchildren. In case of exposure it may even cause death.

In the early days of radioactivity, scientists did not realize these dangers. Marie and Pierre Curie, after having worked for a while with radioactivity materials, noticed that their fingers were reddened and swollen and the skin was peeling off. Henry Becquerel carried a small tube with radium in it in his waistcoat pocket, and was surprised to find a burn on his chest. Others who worked with radioactive materials also reported burns and injuries of various kinds.

The strange fact is that it can harm without causing pain, which is the warning signal we expect from harmfulness. Pain makes us pull back our hands from a fire or a hot object, but a person carrying radioactive materials has no way of telling whether he is touching something too “hot” for safety. Besides, the “burns” or other harmfulness that radioactivity produces may not appear for weeks. A person may have been hurt without knowing it for some time.

Never, Never Give Up

We often hear people say, “Never give up.” These are encouraging words that give a person determination. A person who believes in them will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, determination to succeed is an important quality to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.

One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at something new, so we should not feel discouraged and should try again. Besides, if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow as people. Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes only if we persist making an effort. If we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted. Finally, we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives. If we never challenge ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.

In short, it is important that we do not give up when working towards our goals. Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us to become better, more confident people. Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of attaining our goals, but if we keep trying, there is always a chance that we will succeed one day.

Forgive and Forget

When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible—and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite and better sleep patterns. “People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good. “So it can help save on the wear and tear on your system and allow people to feel more energetic.”

So when someone has hurt you, calm yourself first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing, “says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting a very long time.” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who upset you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Finally, try to see things from the other person’s perspective. You may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance, fear—even love. To gain perspective, you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person’s point of view.

Keep a Proper Body Weight

To maintain a given body weight, your energy input must balance your energy output. However, sometimes the overall energy balance is upset, and your normal body weight will either fall or increase.

The term body image refers to the mental image we have of our own physical appearance and it can be influenced by variety of factors, including how much you weigh or how that weight is distributed. Research has revealed that about 40 percent of adult men and 55 percent of adult women are dissatisfied with their current body weight. Similar findings have also been reported at the school level, mainly with female students.

At the college level, a study found that 85 percent of both male and female first year students desired to change their body weight. The primary cause of this concern is the value the American society in general assigns to physical appearance. Thinness is currently an attribute that females desire highly. Males generally desire muscularity. The vast majority of individuals who want to change their body weight do it for the sake of appearance: most want to lose excess body fat. While a smaller percentage of individuals actually want to gain weight.
