Evidence Suggesting Water Flows on Mars

When was the day that people started to have dreams of flying in the blue sky? When did people build the very first airplane successfully? When did scientists send the very first satellite into the space?

And now, we have news from the NASA that “The Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter has found evidence that suggests salty streams of seasonal water flow on the surface of Mars”.

The NYT reports:

High-resolution photographs taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which arrived at Mars in 2006, show fingerlike streaks up to five yards wide that appear on some steep slopes in the late Martian spring. These streaks grow and shift through summer as temperatures warm, reaching hundreds of yards in length before they fade in winter. One crater had about 1,000 streaks.

But finding streaks is not the same as finding actual water. An instrument on the Mars orbiter capable of detecting water has not, in fact, found any, but that may just mean that the amount of water in the flows is too little to be seen from orbit.

Below is a picture and a video, enjoy!

Man Arrested for Building Nuclear Reactor in Kitchen

I always thought this could only happen in movies and I have never thought it could happen in real life.

According to the Yahoo News, “A Swedish man has been arrested after building a nuclear reactor in his kitchen, claiming that splitting atoms is his ‘hobby”.

The Swede, named in media reports as Richard Handl, 31, was taken into custody after he contacted the country’s Radiation Authority, who in turn alerted police. Handl had kept a blog on his efforts, stating recently, “I was arrested and sent to jail, when the police and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authory (sic) searched my apartment”.

What interests me is the man also writes blogs for his “hobby”–building a nuclear reactor in the kitchen. For example, “They took all of my radioactive stuff…so my project is cancelled!” he added. With posts dating back to May, Handl’s ‘experiments’ included blending chemicals Americium, Radium and Beryllium on a gas cooker. Mr Handl claims that he has ‘always been interested in physics and chemistry’.

In his first post Handl states, “My project is to build a working nuclear reactor. Not to gain electricity, just for fun and to see if it’s possible to split atoms at home”.

I was wondering how would his neighbor feel if they knew there is something like nuclear reactor just next door.
