Dangerous Games

race-car

Because they feel compelled to show off in front of their friends, some teenagers play dangerous games. In one incident, police found a group of boys performing a dangerous stunt with their cars. The boys would perch on the hoods of cars going thirty-five or forty miles an hour. Then the driver would brake sharply, and the boy who flew the farthest off the car would win. Teenagers also drive their cars with the lights off and pass each other on hills or curves as ways of challenging each other. Water, as well as cars, seems to tempt young people to invent dangerous contents. Some students dared each other to swim through a narrow pipe under a four-lane highway. The pipe carried water from a stream to a pond, and the swimmer would have to hold his or her breath for several minutes before coming out on the other side. Another contest involved diving off the rocky sides of a quarry. Because large stones sat under the water in certain places, any dive could result in a broken neck. But the students would egg each other on to go “rock diving.” Playing deadly games like these is a horrifying phase of growing up for some teenagers.

Jogging

jogging

One of the main advantages of jogging over many other sports is that it can be done anywhere. People jog around college campuses, around housing estates, in parks, in the countryside and even in urban areas. Special courts, fields, pitches and running tracks are not necessary. Similarly, no special equipment is required-no costly bats, rackets or balls and no expensive sports kit. Good quality running shoes are advisable, but otherwise the jogger can simply wear loose, conformable clothing. Special jogging suits are widely available these days and can be bought quite cheaply but these are not essential.

In addition to being able to jog anywhere, you can also jog at any time, in any season! It’s not unusual to see joggers exercising in the height of summer or in the depth of winter! Jogging is a solo sport. You don’t need to wait until you have gathered a team or found a partner. You can jog alone. There is no harm, of course, in jogging with a friend.

One of the greatest freedoms of jogging is simply being able to do it, whether it is early in the morning or late at night. A few words of warning, however: lone female joggers should be especially careful to choose sensible jogging routes, particularly at night time, to minimize the risk of being attacked.

How I Relax

The way I relax when I get home from school on Thursday night is, first of all, to put my three children to bed. Next, I run hot water in the tub and put in lots of perfumed bubble bath. As the bubbles rise, I undress and get into the tub. The water is relaxing to my tired muscles, and the bubbles are tingly on my skin. I lie back and put my feet on the water spigots, with everything but my hair under the water. I like to stick my big toe up the spigot and spray water over the tub. After about ten minutes of soaking, I wash myself with scented soap, get out and dry myself off, and put on my nightgown. Then I go downstairs and make myself two ham, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches on white bread and pour myself a tall glass of ice-tea with plenty of sugar and ice cubes. I carry these into the living room and turn on the television. To get comfortable, I sit on the couch with a pillow behind me and my legs under me. I enjoy watching the Tonight Show or a late movie. The time is very peaceful after a long hard day of housecleaning, cooking, washing, and attending night class.

Cosmetic Surgery

Surgery that can improve the way a person looks is become more and more popular in the United States. This kind of surgery is call cosmetic surgery, and both men and women are turning to this treatment as a way of keeping their appearance young as well as keeping competitive in their jobs.

Men especially are beginning to turn face-lifts, liposuction, and implants to help them look younger. As companies develop and move younger employees into higher positions, older employees in their late forties and early fifties feel the need to look and act younger in order to stay competitive. A younger look through cosmetic surgery may give an older employee a few more years on the job. These operations are not without danger, however.

One young woman had an eye operation to get rid of the bags under her eyes. She described the operation as terrible. She said.”When he started cutting, I was fully awake. Even though he’d given me an injection near my eyes, I saw everything.” She went on to explain, “ I knew I had to keep still because of what he was doing. He was scraping away fat underneath my eyes. It took about ten minutes. After he finished, I felt I could not walk.” Her trouble did not end after the operation. For two weeks, her eyes were swollen almost completely closed; and even dark glasses could not hide the side effects of the operation.

How Fear Can Damage Your Health

Fear and anxiety lead to stress. When you are stressed, adrenaline drips into the system. When you live like this long-term you do great physical harm to your  body.

Forced to remain in situations that produce stress, your metabolism changes. The human body is simply not constructed to constantly operate on emergency power. Long term exposure to high levels of adrenaline leads to disorders such as hypertension. Over-exposure can lead to loss of appetite, insomnia, fatigue, loss of libido, irritable Bowel Syndrome and a general decline in health.

Adrenaline harms our immune systems, contributes to heart disease and helps in the development of cancers. A long-term study of 400 male and 200 female executives—people who routinely operate under high levels of adrenalins—showed that the men suffered more heart problems and the women more cancer than people who had less stressful, anxiety-causing jobs.
