There is a desolate island surrounded by the sea. No supplies, no shelter, only a little food, guns, ammunition and some other useless things, can a human being live in such a place for more than 27 years, or even build his own castle depending on himself, or plant his own crops without any help from others? We may say no. However, it all happens in “Robinson Crusoe”.
“Robinson Crusoe”, written by Defoe, the famous British novelist, tells a story like this: Robinson, the hero of the story, survived a heavy storm in a sailing and lost all his friends on board. After being drifted to a desert island, his heart was full of helplessness and loneliness and he did not know how to live on this island. But he tried to comfort himself constantly. Fortunately, he overcame countless difficulties with his wisdom and courage and continued his life there having a lot of fun. Finally he got the chance to go back home while he had almost forgot what a civilized society looked like.
In the story, Robinson built up a house using the tools he found in the destroyed ship, planted wheat and rice and also kept animals. It was obvious that Robinson met various difficulties and frustrations in the process of gaining these basic living conditions though he paid a lot of hard work. For example, the two tiers of the wall of his house took him more than a year before the completion. The first time he tried to plant wheat and rice he lost almost half of the valuable stocks, for he simply chose the wrong time. In order to dig several cellars to store fresh water, Robinson had to work for months. The spirit of never giving up always guided Robinson to figure the problems out. And every little piece of work on the island symbolized his painstaking efforts. And in this way, Robinson created his own material and spiritual kingdom on the desert island.
I admired Robinson so much, especial his determination and perseverance. It took Robinson a few years to make a ship. However, he just could not get ship down to the sea water because it was too far away from the coast. All was in vain. The hope did not come into Robinson’s mind again until “Friday” (a wild man rescued by him) turned up. Friday was then educated and helped a lot in Robinson’s returning home.
Robinson was a real strong man, for he made it possible to live on a desolate for almost 30 years. And the point was that he struggled against the forces of nature and tempered himself in the face of adversity. He managed the island and made an extraordinary achievement.
This book was dedicated to those who always depended on parents at home and friends in school. It’s well worth reading.
