Who is the first one in drinking a new type of coke or Pepsi-Co? Who is the first one in taking a tablet of aspirin? Who is the first one in using shampoos? Did you know all these things? The one I’m referring to is the animal—cat, rabbit, rat and so on which are widely and cruelly used in various kinds of scientific researches, and millions of them die every year. Every life created by god is equal. Bearing that in mind, a huge amount of people have been no-animal-testing users. They strongly propose that animals shall not be used in scientific researches.
Experiment animals are protective walls of human beings’ health. They are routinely cut open, poisoned and then caged in for weeks, months or even years. Some animals are often given diseases to see whether a new drug will work or whether it has side effects. Some animals are killed by researchers in order to see the degree of damage inside their bodies. And we can often see that baby cats or rabbits being separated from their mothers on TV too. This is not moral. Things can be made clearer by turning it round. If there is a day when all these animals become masters of this planet, and we human beings become “slaves”—the scientific research targets. What would we think about? It is reported that there are 3million animals die annually in scientific researches in UK. The number is about 115 million in America. Statistics show that an animal dies for scientific researches every three seconds. However, the exact number of animals killed in the researches every year is unknown, for researchers or governments never care about these dead, not to mention counting the numbers.
But why don’t governments do something about this? The answer is simple: money. From animal breeders to companies, from companies to researchers, from researchers to governments, from governments to companies, animals used in experiment have already become an industry wearing a shining golden coat. Each player benefits a lot. And every single mistake would cost them millions or billions of dollars. So do you still think governments will take their actions? No, definitely not! Only these wretched animals on operating tables will remain shouting screamingly and helplessly.
Someone may argue that animal tests are a must before products coming into markets. But is this the only way for testing? Or is it the safest way? Today’s non-animal scientific research methods are actually humane, more accurate, less expensive and less time-consuming. Yet most researches are still cutting animals and seeing blood flying everywhere in labs. Fortunately, there have been many advances recently. For instance, Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Co have agreed to stop using animals to test or develop their products, except those required by laws. England, Sweden, New Zealand, Austria and Japan have also banned or limited biomedical researches on apes. Just as Dr. Alan Goldberg, director of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at Johns Hopkins University says “I have never found chimpanzee work justifiable… they are a species that’s incredibly close to human capacity, and we just have to recognize that if it shouldn’t be done in humans it shouldn’t be done in chimps.”
Animal tests are still going on and they won’t stop in a day; companies or governments may still remain inactive. But if you support or agree that all animal tests should be forbidden or at lest those for personal-care products then, please stop waiting anymore, and let’s do the following “3R’s”—replace the use of animals in scientific researches with non-animal alternatives whenever possible; reduce the number of animals used in any animal-testing procedure; refine researches so that animals experience less pain, suffering, or discomfort.(organizations usually argue for the “3R”) Remember, when you are buying cosmetics, please choose those who have “cruelty free” labels. Thus you are still humanitarian, or at least your beauty isn’t based on “animal abuse”.
